Creating Disaster By Cleaning

So at some point during the sewing and cutting for the green quilt I decided it was imperative to CLEAN! It was hard to find some things while I was sewing, things were just put haphazardly everywhere and none of the fabric was put in a place where I could actually see all of it.

I also knew I was going to be taking on some wall hangings for other gifts that would take even more green fabric and have smaller pieces that might be harder to control. So I started looking through my closet and finding as many fabric pieces as possible and just piling it on my sewing desk.

Fabric Pile

I was floored by how much fabric I actually had. I didn’t know there was actually that much fabric in my room. The pile had to be at least 2-3 feet tall, and spanned the whole table, which is about 5′ long.

The husband was so…shocked at the amount I had. I think part of him wanted to lay down the Husbandly foot and say I couldn’t buy anymore. But then again when it comes to his classic video game collection he really doesn’t have that much room to talk, ha!

It took more than 2 weeks for me to get all of the fabric organized and folded. Yes, I folded EVERY piece that I could. The bigger pieces posed a bit of a problem since I didn’t quite know how I could store those since it all didn’t fit in my drawers, so it just ended up going in a big pile in a box on top of the drawers.

Fabric Drawer 1

I have one of my 4 drawers dedicated to the large amount of small pieces I have collected, two for slightly larger pieces and unfinished projects…

Fabric Drawer 2

Fabric Drawer 3

…And one for all the pieces that aren’t really for quilting. Some lacy stuff, denim, sheer stuff, things that I got when I had this insane notion that I could make clothing.

Fabric Drawer 4

Yeah that notion didn’t last long, hence only one drawer.

I used the fabric folding method in this video, and it took forever but I really do love the results.

I used a 4″ wide ruler for the small pieces, and a 6″ wide ruler for the larger pieces. I think the effort was well worth it. Yay! I can find things!
